MA Christian Studies Course Overview
CH 501 | Church History I | 3 Hours
Knowledge of church history is an important component of training for ministry. Pastors and church leaders in Africa need to understand how the church throughout the world and throughout time has understood itself and sought to bear witness to the gospel. Church History I will trace the history of the church from the time just after the Apostles through the fall of the Roman Empire. The church history classes will deal honestly with the successes and failures of the church. This course will also seek to teach students how to make history.
ENG 501 | Research & Writing 1 | 2 Hours
The clarity in written communication will enlarge and enrich the ministries of pastors and church leaders. This class teaches students how to write at the master’s level. It will focus on style, writing argument, and competency in research.
CH 502 | Church History II | 3 Hours

Church History II will trace the history of the church after the fall of the Roman Empire to just before the Protestant Reformation. The church history classes will deal honestly with the successes and failures of the church.
THEO 501 | Theology of the Christian Life | 2 Hours
The practices of the Christian life require careful theological analysis. This course will explore the biblical doctrine of sanctification, with particular attention to the believer’s union with Christ and the way in which the Christian life is lived out in the body. The course will also explore the spiritual disciplines.
PT 501 | African Religious Context | 3 Hours
In spite of the rich Christian heritage of many parts of Africa, African traditional religion continues to exercise significant influence over people’s practices and beliefs. Islam is also growing in popularity. This course will explore the differences in belief systems and practices between Christianity and these other religious systems.
THEO 504 | Christian Epistemology | 3 Hours
Christians and non-Christians have drastically different answers to the question, “How do I know what is true?” This course will explore the standard for truth and how being self-conscious about our understanding of truth can help us to know God and everything else better.
CH 503 | History of the Church in Africa | 3 Hours
Knowledge of church history is an important component of training for ministry. Church History IV will explore the history of the church in Africa. The course will begin with the ancient origin of the African church, followed by the rise of Islam. The course will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the modern mission movement in Africa. Students will come away from this class with a strong understanding of the current state of the church in Africa.
THEO 502 | Theology of the New Testament Church | 3 Hours
The New Testament outlines specific instructions for how churches should organise themselves. This course will explore the New Testament church practices of membership, the ordinances, and church discipline. The course will explore how faithfulness to these New Testament principles promotes discipleship.
PT 502 | African Christian Ethics | 2 Hours
With the clashing of cultures that globalisation brings, African pastors and church leaders must shepherd their people through numerous ethical issues. Unfortunately, many standard ethical textbooks and ethical courses deal only with the issues facing Christians in the West. This course will explore the ethical issues facing the African church.
PT 503 | Missions in the African Church | 2 Hours
Africa has seen some of the fastest growth in Christianity in the world. And yet many people groups in Africa still do not have access to the gospel. The African church is well-positioned to reach the tribes that have not yet heard the gospel.
OCT 501 | OT Biblical Theology | 3 Hours
What was the faith of our spiritual forebears in the days of the Old Testament saints? How does their experience of the Creator-God relate to us, and how does God’s work through them lay the foundation for the redemption of Jesus Messiah? This course will study the metanarrative of the OT.
NT 501 | NT Biblical Theology | 3 Hours
A systematic study of the metanarrative of the NewTestament. The course walks the student through the development of the major doctrines of the New Testament.
ENG 502 | Capstone Project | 2 Hours
As the capstone of the learning experience, students write a 60-page paper. The thesis demonstrates the student’s ability to sustain a line of research and argumentation. It is to make original contributions to theological and academic conversation that is culturally relevant to the African context.
